Common Name: Yellow Madagascar Palm
Scientific Name: Pachypodium rosulatum var. gracilis
Description:
Pachypodium Yellow Gracilis is a rare and eye-catching succulent shrub native to Madagascar. Known for its swollen, bottle-shaped caudex and upright spiny stems, this plant stores water in its trunk, making it highly drought-tolerant. During the growing season, it produces bright yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers that contrast beautifully with its thick green foliage. Its sculptural form and unique blooming habit make it a prized specimen for collectors of caudiciform and exotic succulents.
Main Characteristics:
- Growth Form: Caudiciform with upright, spiny branches
- Foliage: Narrow, deep green leaves at the tips of branches
- Flowers: Bright yellow, trumpet-shaped blooms in spring and summer
- Size: Typically grows 30–90 cm tall in cultivation
- Light: Full sun to bright, indirect light
- Hardiness: USDA zones 10–11; not frost tolerant
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers full sun. Indoors, place near a bright window with plenty of light.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry during the active growing season (spring to autumn). Reduce or stop watering in winter when dormant.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix. Avoid heavy or water-retentive soils.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted cactus fertiliser monthly during active growth.
- Temperature: Keep above 10°C (50°F). Protect from frost and prolonged cold.
- Dormancy: Loses leaves in winter and enters a dormant phase. This is normal—resume watering when new growth appears in spring.
