Description
Pachypodium lamerei is a striking, tree-like succulent known for its thick, spiny trunk and tropical-looking crown of leaves. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm but belongs to the dogbane family. It can grow up to 6 metres tall in its natural habitat, but it remains more compact when grown indoors or in pots.
- Trunk: Thick, grey-green, and covered in sharp spines.
- Leaves: Long, narrow, and dark green, emerging in a cluster at the top of the trunk.
- Flowers: Large, fragrant, white flowers may appear in summer, but flowering is rare in cultivation.
- Growth Habit: Upright and columnar; often mistaken for a palm due to its appearance.
Care Guide
Condition | Recommendation |
---|---|
Light | Prefers full sun. Place in a bright, sunny location indoors or outdoors. |
Water | Water thoroughly when the soil is dry. Reduce watering in winter when the plant goes dormant. Do not allow soil to stay wet. |
Soil | Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil. A mix with sand or perlite works well. |
Temperature | Thrives in warm temperatures (above 20°C). Sensitive to frost and cold — protect from temperatures below 10°C. |
Humidity | Tolerates dry air; no special humidity requirements. |
Fertiliser | Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid feeding in winter. |
Repotting | Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring. Use gloves when handling due to sharp spines. |
The first two photo serves a display purpose only. The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 210mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.

Absolutely thrilled with my Pachypodium Lamerei purchase. It arrived well packaged and with fast delivery. It is exactly as described and transplanted well, although it did drop quite a few leaves. It appears to have adjusted well.\n\nThank you Succulents Online for your awesome service.
