Pachypodium geayi, commonly known as the Madagascar Palm, is an exotic, tree-like succulent that features a thick, spiny, silver-grey trunk and long, slender, bluish-green leaves with a silvery sheen. Native to Madagascar, this drought-tolerant plant resembles a miniature palm tree, though it’s actually a succulent in the Apocynaceae family. In summer, mature plants may produce stunning white, star-shaped flowers. Pachypodium geayi is an architectural statement plant, perfect for sunny patios, rock gardens, and large indoor pots.

Characteristics:

  • Thick, spiny, silver-grey trunk that stores water.

  • Long, narrow, bluish-green leaves with a silver sheen.

  • Can reach up to 1.5–3 meters in height when grown outdoors; remains smaller in pots.

  • Produces large, white, star-shaped flowers on mature plants in summer.

  • Slow-growing but highly resilient and strikingly architectural.

  • Perfect for feature pots, xeriscape gardens, and collectors of rare succulents.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Requires full sun to thrive. Can tolerate partial shade but prefers bright, direct sunlight.

  • Watering: Water deeply but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when dormant.

  • Soil: Needs well-draining cactus or succulent soil. Avoid water-retentive soils.

  • Temperature: Loves warmth and is tolerant of high heat. Protect from frost and cold temperatures below 5°C.

  • Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring-summer).

  • Propagation: Typically propagated from seeds.

  • Maintenance: Minimal. Handle with care due to spines. Remove dead leaves and flowers as needed.

The first two photos serves a display purpose only. The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 130mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
