Fatsia Japonica

Fatsia japonica, commonly known as the Japanese Aralia or False Castor Oil Plant, is a dramatic and eye-catching evergreen shrub native to southern Japan and South Korea. It is admired for its large, deeply lobed leaves and its ability to thrive in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Appearance

• Leaves: The most striking feature of this plant is its large, glossy, deeply lobed leaves. The leaves can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter and have a leathery texture. They are typically a deep green color but some cultivars may have variegated or white-tinged foliage.

• Habit: Fatsia japonica has a bushy, upright growth habit, and can reach a height of 6-15 feet (1.8-4.5 meters) outdoors. When grown indoors, it typically stays smaller, reaching around 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 meters) tall.

• Flowers: In the autumn, mature plants may produce clusters of small, white flowers followed by black berries. However, flowering is less common when grown indoors.

Growth Habits and Care:

• Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light or partial shade.

• Soil: Prefers moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.

• Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

• Temperature: Prefers moderate temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). Can tolerate cooler temperatures in winter.

• Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity levels.
