Euphorbia makallensis, also known as the Candelabra Spurge, is a visually stunning succulent native to the arid regions of East Africa. This captivating plant showcases a unique growth habit with its upright, columnar stems that resemble a candelabra, adding a touch of the exotic to any collection.

Appearance:

  • Stems: Thick, cylindrical stems that grow vertically, branching out to create a multi-stemmed, candelabra-like structure. The stems are typically a bluish-green color and may have subtle reddish or purplish markings.

  • Spines: Short, sharp spines are present along the ridges of the stems, adding to its visual appeal and providing protection.

  • Leaves: Small, rudimentary leaves may appear on new growth but quickly fall off.

  • Flowers: In the spring or summer, Euphorbia makallensis produces small, yellow or greenish-yellow flowers at the tips of the stems.

Growth Habits and Care:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent root rot.

  • Watering: Drought-tolerant once established; water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly in winter.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures but can tolerate some cool temperatures if kept dry.

  • Maintenance: Minimal maintenance required.

Additional Information:

  • Euphorbia makallensis is a relatively slow-growing succulent, making it a great choice for those seeking a low-maintenance plant.

  • It is a popular addition to rock gardens, succulent arrangements, or as a striking specimen plant in containers.

  • Its unique candelabra-like form and bluish-green stems make it a visually interesting and attractive addition to any succulent collection.
