Delosperma Pruinosum

• Common Names:

  • Often called "Pickle Plant" due to the shape of its leaves.  

• Foliage:

  • Distinctive, small, cylindrical leaves that resemble tiny pickles.  

  • The leaves are covered in fine, white, bristly hairs, giving them a unique texture.  

  • These hairs are actually specialized bladder cells that reflect light, which is a characteristic of many Delosperma species.

• Growth Habit:

  • It's a sprawling, low-growing succulent, making it a good ground cover.  

  • Can grow somewhat semi-upright.  

• Flowers:

  • Produces small, pale yellow flowers.

Cultivation and Care:

• Light:

  • Prefers full sun to light shade.

• Soil:

  • Requires well-draining soil, like a succulent or cactus mix.

     

• Watering:

  • Drought-tolerant. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.  

• Hardiness:

  • It is important to provide protection from hard frosts.  

Points of Clarification:

• The plant is a succulent, not a cactus, despite the common name "Pickle Cactus."  

• The taxonomic classification of this plant has seen some changes, which is why you'll see the names Delosperma pruinosum and Delosperma echinatum used interchangeably.

In essence, Delosperma pruinosum/echinatum is a visually interesting succulent prized for its unusual "pickle-like" leaves and its ability to tolerate dry conditions.
