Cacti Polaskia

Polaskia, commonly known as the Candle Cactus or Totem Pole Cactus, is a captivating genus of columnar cacti native to Mexico. These unique plants are characterized by their tall, branching stems that resemble ancient totems or weathered candles.

Appearance:

• Stems: Tall, columnar stems, often branching with age, creating an intriguing silhouette. The stems are typically green but can develop a bluish or grayish hue as they mature.

• Ribs: Prominent ribs run the length of the stems, providing structure and support.

• Areoles: Small, woolly areoles dot the ribs, from which spines and flowers emerge.

• Spines: Variable in length and color, ranging from short and bristly to long and needle-like. Some species exhibit colorful spines, adding to their visual appeal.

• Flowers: In spring or summer, Polaskia cacti produce beautiful, funnel-shaped flowers that range in color from white to pink, orange, or yellow.

Growing Conditions:

• Light: Full sun exposure is essential for optimal growth and flowering.

• Soil: Well-draining cactus mix with good aeration.

• Water: Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter.

Ideal For:

• Xeriscaping: Perfect for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and desert-themed landscapes.

• Container Gardening: Can be grown in containers, making them suitable for patios, balconies, or indoors with ample sunlight.
