Mammillaria mystax

Mammillaria mystax, commonly known as the Pincushion Cactus Mystax, is a charming and visually appealing cactus native to Mexico. It is admired for its globular shape, dense covering of spines, and beautiful, often colorful flowers.

Appearance

• Shape and Size: The Pincushion Cactus Mystax typically forms small, globular stems that can grow solitary or in clusters, creating a dense, cushion-like appearance as the plant matures. It usually reaches a height of up to 3 inches (7 cm) and a diameter of 2-4 inches (5-10 cm).

• Tubercles and Spines: Instead of ribs, this cactus has tubercles - small, nipple-like projections that are arranged in spirals. The tubercles are covered in clusters of spines, which can vary in color, length, and density. Mammillaria mystax typically has white, feathery radial spines and longer, darker central spines, creating a beautiful contrast.

• Flowers: In the spring and summer months, it produces a ring of small, brightly colored flowers encircling the crown of the plant. Flower colors range from shades of pink, red, and magenta to sometimes even white or yellow.

Growth Habits and Care:

• Sunlight: Pincushion cacti thrive in full sun to partial shade.

• Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.

• Watering: Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
