Pincushion cactus is a small, spherical cactus plant belonging to the Mammillaria genus of the Cactaceae family. It is native to Mexico and is also known as bird's nest cactus, because of its compact, globe-like shape.

The stems are typically green, but may have a reddish or yellowish hue. The cactus produces small, white, yellow, or pink flowers in spring or early summer, which grow from the top of the plant and are followed by small, reddish fruits.

Pincushion cactus is a relatively easy plant to care for and is well-suited to growing in containers or as part of a cactus garden. It prefers well-draining soil, full sunlight, and minimal watering. The plant is quite hardy and can tolerate both high and low temperatures, but it is sensitive to frost and should be protected in colder climates.

This Plant comes in a 190mm diameter container and the plant you see is the plant you get. The plant will be shipped bare rooted.

FLOWERING CHARACTERISTICS

As a mature flowering cactus, this specimen is ready to produce the delightful blooms Mammillaria are famous for:

- Timing: Spring to early summer blooming season
- Colors: Small white, yellow, or pink star-shaped flowers
- Display: Crown of blooms forms a spectacular ring around the top
- Fruit: Small elongated reddish fruits follow flowering
- Reliability: Mature specimens like this bloom annually with proper care

💡 FLOWERING TIP: Provide a cool, dry winter rest (10-15°C) with minimal watering. Resume regular watering in spring for spectacular blooms.

LIGHT REQUIREMENTS

Full sun to bright light is essential:
- Outdoor: 6+ hours direct sunlight daily for best results
- Indoor: Brightest south-facing window available
- Summer: Light afternoon shade in extreme heat (40°C+)
- Winter: Maximum light exposure to support spring flowering

WATERING SCHEDULE

SPRING/SUMMER (Growing Season)

- Water thoroughly when soil completely dry (every 7-14 days)
- Allow complete drainage - never let roots sit in water
- Water in morning for excess moisture to evaporate
- Increase frequency during hot, dry Australian summers

AUTUMN/WINTER (Dormant Period)

- Reduce dramatically (every 4-6 weeks or less)
- Water only enough to prevent shriveling
- Cool, dry dormancy triggers abundant spring flowering
- Nearly cease watering if temperatures drop below 10°C

⚠️ ROOT ROT WARNING: Overwatering kills more cacti than anything else. When in doubt, wait longer. Mammillaria tolerate drought but not soggy soil.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What's the difference between 190mm and smaller pincushion cacti?
A 190mm specimen is mature and flowering-ready, representing 5-8 years of growth. Smaller plants (50-80mm) take years to flower.

Will this exact cactus produce flowers?
Yes! At this mature size, it's ready to flower. Provide proper care including cool, dry winter rest, and expect spring/summer blooms.

Is this suitable for beginners?
Absolutely! Mammillaria pincushion cacti are among the easiest cacti to grow.

How do I safely handle spiny cacti?
Use thick gardening gloves, folded newspaper, or foam padding.

Can I keep this indoors year-round in Australia?
Yes, with a very bright, sunny window (south-facing ideal).
