Parodia erinacea (Hedgehog Cactus): A Compact Gem for Cactus Enthusiasts
Parodia erinacea, commonly known as the Hedgehog Cactus, is a captivating species native to southern Brazil, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina. Its distinctive globular form, dense spination, and vibrant yellow flowers make it a standout addition to any cactus collection.
Appearance
-
Form & Size: Begins as a small, flattened globe and gradually becomes more cylindrical with age. Mature specimens typically reach up to 15 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter.
-
Spines: Features a dense covering of spines, primarily yellow to golden in color, which can be very sharp, giving the cactus its 'hedgehog' resemblance.
-
Flowers: In late spring and summer, it produces beautiful, funnel-shaped, yellow flowers that contrast strikingly against the spiny body.
Care Guidelines
-
Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight but appreciates some light shade during peak summer heat.
-
Watering: Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly as the cactus goes dormant.
-
Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures but can tolerate brief periods of cool temperatures if kept dry. Protect from frost.
🌼 Additional Insights
-
Growth Habit: Parodia erinacea is a relatively slow-growing cactus, making it a good choice for container gardening.
