The Grafted Cactus Gymnocalycium, often known as Moon Cactus (Gymnocalycium mihanovichii ‘Hibotan’), is a vibrant and colourful cactus that features a vividly colored top (scion) grafted onto a green cactus base (rootstock). The top cactus lacks chlorophyll, which gives it its brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow, or pink, and relies on the rootstock for survival. Compact and charming, these cacti are perfect for brightening up desks, windowsills, and indoor plant arrangements with their bold, eye-catching hues.
Characteristics:
-
Brightly coloured scion (red, pink, yellow, or orange) with soft, short spines.
-
Grafted onto a hardy green Hylocereus cactus base for nutrient support.
-
Compact, globular shape, typically 8-12 cm tall.
-
Can produce small, star-shaped flowers under ideal conditions.
-
Popular for modern indoor decor, succulent gifts, and miniature gardens.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct midday sun which can fade colors.
-
Watering: Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
-
Soil: Plant in a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Ensure pots have drainage holes.
-
Temperature: Best kept indoors or in warm climates. Protect from frost and cold drafts.
-
Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during the growing season.
-
Propagation: Cannot propagate via offsets; new plants are created through grafting.
-
Maintenance: Minimal care required. Keep away from waterlogged conditions and overexposure to sun.
