Bursera fagaroides, commonly known as the Elephant Tree, is a fascinating succulent tree native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. It is especially loved by bonsai enthusiasts for its thick, sculptural trunk and delicate, aromatic foliage. Its natural bonsai-like form makes it a standout plant both indoors and outdoors.

Key Characteristics

  • Growth Form: Develops a thick, swollen trunk with peeling, papery bark resembling elephant skin.

  • Size: Can grow up to several meters in the wild but stays compact in pots, making it perfect for bonsai training.

  • Leaves: Small, pinnate, aromatic leaves that drop in winter or dry seasons (deciduous).

  • Flowers: Tiny, white-green flowers followed by red berry-like fruits.

  • Special Feature: Known for its fragrant resin, historically used as incense and in traditional medicine.

Care Tips

  • Light: Prefers full sun to bright light. Outdoors, give it plenty of sun; indoors, place near a bright south-facing window.

  • Watering: Water moderately during the growing season (spring–summer), letting soil dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when dormant.

  • Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus/succulent mix; sandy soil works best.

  • Temperature: Warm-loving (18–30°C). Protect from frost; keep above 10°C.

  • Pruning & Training: Ideal for bonsai shaping—responds well to pruning and wiring.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted cactus/succulent fertilizer during the growing months.
