Bursera fagaroides, often referred to as the Elephant Tree or Torchwood, is a slow-growing succulent tree native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. It is prized among bonsai enthusiasts for its thick, swollen caudex (base), smooth peeling bark, and fine, pinnate leaves that resemble those of a small tropical tree. Over time, it develops a sculptural form, making it highly ornamental and ideal for bonsai, container culture, and dry gardens.
In its natural habitat, Bursera fagaroides is drought-tolerant and adapted to arid conditions, shedding its leaves during dry periods and re-sprouting with the rains.
Main Characteristics:
- Thickened trunk (caudex) that stores water
- Smooth, papery bark that peels in layers revealing reddish or gray tones underneath
- Finely divided, aromatic leaves that resemble those of the citrus family
- Can grow into a small tree in the ground but remains compact in containers
- May produce small, inconspicuous greenish flowers and later small fruits
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers full sun to light shade. Strong light helps develop a thick trunk and compact growth
- Water: Water sparingly. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter or dormancy
- Soil: Requires well-draining, gritty soil. A cactus or bonsai mix works well
- Temperature: Best suited to warm, dry climates. Protect from frost and prolonged cold
- Humidity: Low humidity preferred; excellent for xeriscaping or dry indoor spaces
- Maintenance: Can be pruned to shape, especially in bonsai culture. May go deciduous during drought or winter
- Propagation: Usually propagated from seeds or cuttings. Seeds require warmth and patience to germinate
