Blue Ginger (Dichorisandra thyrsiflora) is a tropical foliage plant loved for its vivid violet-blue flower spikes and glossy green leaves. It’s a lovely choice for a shaded patio pot or a sheltered garden bed when you want an easy pop of colour, and it’s available in 130mm and 200mm pot sizes to suit your space. Despite the common name, it isn’t a true ginger and belongs to the spiderwort family (Commelinaceae).
Blue Ginger grows in upright stems with glossy, lance-shaped leaves and a neat clumping habit, so it looks full and lush without being messy. When it flowers, the tall blue-purple blooms sit above the foliage and really stand out, especially from late summer into autumn in warm, protected spots. It’s a great way to add a tropical feel to part-shade areas, where bright flowers can sometimes be a bit harder to come by.
Features:
- Striking violet-blue flowers in tall clusters
- Glossy, lance-shaped leaves on upright stems
- Great for adding tropical colour to shaded or sheltered spots
- Generally low-fuss once it’s happy in its position
- Works well in garden beds or large pots
Light:
Bright, filtered light or partial shade suits it best. In hotter areas, it’s happiest out of strong afternoon sun.
Water:
Aim to keep the soil evenly moist while it’s actively growing, without letting it become soggy. Let the top of the mix dry a little between waterings, and ease off in cooler weather.
Soil:
A rich, well-draining soil is ideal. For pots, use a quality free-draining mix and make sure the pot has good drainage holes.
Growth Habit:
Upright, clumping perennial. In the right conditions it can reach around 1.5 to 2 m tall.
Hardiness:
Frost-tender. If you’re in a cooler spot, it does very well in a pot so you can move it somewhere protected when the temperature drops.
Perfect For:
Tropical gardens, shaded patios, and indoor decorative containers near bright, indirect light.
The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in 130mm & 200mm diameter containers. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
