Leuchtenbergia principis, known as the Prince of Wales Agave, is a rare and highly sought-after cactus admired for its agave-like rosette form and unusual sculptural beauty. Native to the deserts of Mexico, this slow-growing species is a true collector’s gem, featuring long triangular tubercles that mimic agave leaves, tipped with papery spines in soft gray to bluish tones.

Beneath its striking silhouette lies a massive woody caudex (taproot), a fascinating adaptation that stores water and adds to its rarity among caudiciform plant lovers. At maturity, it rewards growers with fragrant, lemon-yellow to orange flowers, a vibrant contrast against its austere desert form.

 Why Collectors Love It

  • Agave-like elegance – Distinctive rosettes of triangular tubercles.
  • Rare & slow-growing – Highly coveted by succulent and caudex enthusiasts.
  • Massive caudex – Unique underground taproot for drought resilience.
  • Fragrant blooms – Showy, lemon-yellow to orange flowers with sweet scent.

 Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun to bright light; thrives on sunny windowsills or outdoors.
  • Water: Let soil dry completely before watering; very minimal in winter.
  • Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix with pumice or coarse sand.
  • Temperature: Keep above 5°C (41°F); protect from frost and prolonged dampness.

 A Rare Living Sculpture

Leuchtenbergia principis is more than just a cactus—it’s a statement piece for serious collectors. With its bold geometry, desert resilience, and unmatched rarity, this plant brings sculptural elegance and botanical intrigue to any cactus or succulent collection.
