Sempervivum

Sempervivum is a hardy and low-maintenance succulent known for its rosette-shaped foliage and ability to thrive in challenging conditions. Its name means “always alive,” referring to its resilience and ability to survive with minimal care. Each main rosette ("hen") produces smaller offsets ("chicks"), creating a mat-forming, ever-expanding display.

Key Characteristics:

• Foliage: Tight, symmetrical rosettes in a variety of colours, including green, red, bronze, and purple, often changing with the seasons.
• Growth: Spreads via offsets to form dense clusters.
• Size: Individual rosettes typically range from 5 to 15 cm in diameter.
• Hardiness: Exceptionally cold-tolerant; suitable for outdoor growing even in frost-prone areas.
• Blooming: Produces tall flower stalks in summer with star-shaped blooms. Each rosette dies after flowering, but is quickly replaced by offsets.

Care Requirements:

• Light: Full sun to partial shade. More sun enhances colour vibrancy.
• Watering: Water sparingly. Drought-tolerant once established. Ensure soil dries completely between waterings.
• Soil: Requires excellent drainage. A gritty, sandy mix is ideal.
• Temperature: Can tolerate freezing temperatures. Performs best in cool to temperate climates.
• Position: Ideal for rock gardens, borders, containers, rooftop gardens, or green walls.
