Portulacaria afra, commonly known as the Dwarf Jade Plant or Elephant Bush, is a popular succulent native to South Africa. Its thick, glossy green leaves grow on reddish-brown stems, creating a dense, upright or trailing form. Though often mistaken for Crassula ovata (the common Jade Plant), Portulacaria is a distinct species known for its fast growth, drought tolerance, and bonsai potential.
It’s a versatile and low-maintenance plant that thrives in containers, hanging baskets, rock gardens, and even as a miniature hedge in warm climates. In its native habitat, it’s also a food source for elephants—hence the nickname "Elephant Bush."
