Mammillaria hahniana, commonly known as the Old Lady Cactus, is a charming and popular cactus species prized for its dense covering of white, silky hairs that give it a soft, woolly appearance. This globular cactus is adorned with clusters of fine spines and delicate pink to purplish flowers that form a circular crown around its top, creating a striking visual contrast against the snowy-white texture. Compact and slow-growing, the Old Lady Cactus is perfect for indoor pots, cactus gardens, and rockeries.

Characteristics:

  • Rounded, globular shape that can reach up to 25 cm in height and 20 cm in diameter.

  • Covered in fine, white hair-like spines, giving a soft, fluffy appearance.

  • Produces a ring of small, vibrant pink to purple flowers around the crown during spring and summer.

  • Native to central Mexico, adapted to arid environments.

  • An excellent choice for windowsills, succulent collections, and decorative pots.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light indoors or full sun in outdoor settings. Ensure it receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily.

  • Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry completely between watering. Reduce watering frequency during winter dormancy.

  • Soil: Prefers well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. A sandy, gritty substrate is ideal.

  • Temperature: Tolerates warm temperatures but protect from frost. Ideal temperature range is 15-30°C.

  • Fertilizing: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a diluted cactus fertilizer.

  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years in spring to refresh soil and allow for slow growth expansion.

  • Pests: Watch for mealybugs and spider mites. Maintain good airflow to prevent fungal issues.

The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 130mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
