Mammillaria hahniana, commonly known as the Old Lady Cactus, is a charming and popular cactus species prized for its dense covering of white, silky hairs that give it a soft, woolly appearance. This globular cactus is adorned with clusters of fine spines and delicate pink to purplish flowers that form a circular crown around its top, creating a striking visual contrast against the snowy-white texture. Compact and slow-growing, the Old Lady Cactus is perfect for indoor pots, cactus gardens, and rockeries.
Characteristics:
-
Rounded, globular shape that can reach up to 25 cm in height and 20 cm in diameter.
-

-
Produces a ring of small, vibrant pink to purple flowers around the crown during spring and summer.
-
Native to central Mexico, adapted to arid environments.

An excellent choice for windowsills, succulent collections, and decorative pots.
Care Tips:
-
Light: Requires bright, indirect light indoors or full sun in outdoor settings. Ensure it receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily.

-
Soil: Prefers well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. A sandy, gritty substrate is ideal.
-
Temperature: Tolerates warm temperatures but protect from frost. Ideal temperature range is 15-30°C.
-
Fertilizing: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
-
Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years in spring to refresh soil and allow for slow growth expansion.
-
Pests: Watch for mealybugs and spider mites. Maintain good airflow to prevent fungal issues.
