Gerrardanthus macrorhizus is an unusual and eye-catching caudiciform plant, commonly known as Bigfoot due to its large, rounded basal caudex. Native to South Africa, this fascinating species belongs to the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae) and is sought after for its sculptural form and vigorous vining habit. It's ideal for collectors of rare and ornamental plants.

Characteristics:

  • Caudex: Large, swollen base that resembles a woody boulder or foot, used by the plant to store water and nutrients. The caudex can grow up to 50 cm in diameter over time.
  • Vines: Slender, green vines sprout from the caudex during the growing season, often climbing or trailing several meters if supported.
  • Foliage: Deep green, heart-shaped leaves with a delicate texture. The plant is deciduous and sheds its leaves during dormancy.
  • Flowers: Small, yellow-green flowers may appear on mature plants, although flowering is rare in cultivation.

Care Guide:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some morning sun but should be protected from harsh afternoon rays.
  • Watering: During the growing season (spring to autumn), water moderately when the soil is dry to the touch. In winter, reduce watering significantly or stop altogether while the plant is dormant.
  • Humidity: Tolerant of average indoor humidity. Avoid overly humid or poorly ventilated environments.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 20°C and 30°C. Keep above 10°C, as it is sensitive to cold and frost.
  • Soil: Requires a very well-draining mix. A combination of cactus soil, perlite, and gritty sand works well.
  • Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the active growing season with a diluted, balanced fertiliser.
  • Dormancy: The plant naturally goes dormant in winter, during which the vines may die back. This is normal and part of its life cycle.

The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 130mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
