Euphorbia clandestina is a rare and unusual succulent native to South Africa, admired for its upright, sculptural form and textured stems. This species forms a small, columnar shrub made up of cylindrical stems that grow in tight clusters, giving it a clean, architectural look ideal for collectors of rare Euphorbias and caudiciform plants.
Characteristics:
- Stems: Smooth, green to bluish-green cylindrical stems with subtle ridges and tubercles. The plant grows upright and may branch over time.
- Size: Typically grows 20–40 cm tall and slowly expands to form a small clump.
- Flowers: Small, inconspicuous greenish to purplish cyathia (Euphorbia flowers) appear at the stem tips during the warmer seasons.
- Growth Habit: Clumping and upright, with an attractive vertical form.
Care Guide:
- Watering: Water sparingly. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Very sensitive to overwatering.
- Soil: Requires fast-draining soil—use a cactus or succulent mix with extra grit or perlite.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions (20°C–30°C). Protect from frost and cold below 10°C.
- Humidity: Prefers dry air. Ensure good airflow around the plant.
- Fertiliser: Feed lightly with diluted cactus fertiliser during active growth in spring and summer.
- Propagation: Best propagated from stem cuttings. Use gloves, as Euphorbia sap can be irritating.
