Euphorbia erythreae var. erythreae, commonly known as the Red Spurge or the Red Candelabra Tree, is a striking succulent native to the arid regions of East Africa. It is a captivating addition to any succulent collection or xeriscape garden, admired for its unique, candelabra-like form and its ability to thrive in challenging conditions.
Appearance
Stems: Thick, cylindrical, and columnar stems that grow vertically, branching out to create a multi-stemmed, candelabra-like structure. The stems are typically a bluish-green color, but they develop a vibrant reddish or purplish hue when exposed to ample sunlight, creating a stunning visual contrast.
Spines: Short, sharp spines are present along the ridges of the stems, adding to its visual appeal and providing protection.
Flowers: In the spring or summer, Euphorbia erythreae var. erythreae produces small, yellowish-green flowers at the tips of the stems.
Growth Habits and Care:
Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Ample sunlight exposure enhances the reddish coloration of the stems.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.
Watering: Drought-tolerant once established; water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
