Named after the majestic Hawaiian volcano, Echeveria 'Mauna Loa' is a truly captivating succulent. Its large, impressive rosettes feature thick, fleshy leaves with wonderfully ruffled or frilled edges, often displaying a dynamic blend of colors. Young leaves start as a pale green and mature into a stunning mix of pink, grey-green, and even red hues, creating a visually dramatic and ever-changing display. Some mature leaves may also develop fascinating bumpy textures called carunculations, adding to its unique appeal.

Characteristics:

  • Large Rosettes: Forms substantial rosettes that can reach impressive sizes (up to 12-18 inches wide).
  • Ruffled/Frilled Edges: The broad, spoon-shaped leaves exhibit distinctively wavy and curled margins.
  • Variable Coloration: Displays a beautiful gradient of colors, including pale green, pink, grey-green, and red, intensifying with sunlight and stress.
  • Potential Carunculations: Older leaves may develop unique, wart-like bumps on their surface.
  • Relatively Hardy: More tolerant of sun than some other Echeverias.
  • Flowering: In fall to winter, it produces tall, branching flower stalks with nodding orange-pink blooms.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun will enhance the vibrant colors and caruncle development. Protect from intense afternoon sun in very hot climates to prevent scorching.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during the cooler months. Avoid getting water on the rosette to prevent rot.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix.
  • Temperature: Prefers warmer climates (USDA zones 9-11) and should be protected from frost. Can be grown indoors in cooler regions.
  • Fertilizing: Feed sparingly during the active growing season (spring/summer) with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer once every 4-6 weeks.
  • Flowering: While the flowers are attractive, some growers prefer to remove the flower stalks to conserve the plant's energy and maintain the rosette's shape.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated from leaf cuttings or by beheading and rerooting the rosettes, especially when stems become elongated. Offsets ("pups") may also appear at the base.

The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 130mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
