Delosperma lehmannii, often referred to as an "Ice Plant," is a fascinating succulent with distinctive characteristics. Here's a breakdown of key details:

Origin and Habitat:

  • Native to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

  • It thrives in arid conditions, particularly on quartz soils.

Characteristics:

  • Foliage:

    • Features fleshy, triangular, and angular leaves that grow in opposing pairs, creating a geometric pattern.

    • The leaves are typically a glaucous (bluish-green) color with a smooth, waxy texture.

  • Flowers:

    • Produces bright white to straw-colored, daisy-like flowers.

    • Flowering typically occurs in spring and summer.

  • Growth Habit:

    • It's a compact, low-growing plant that forms a cushion-like shape.

    • It has a sprawling habit with prostrate stems.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Sunlight:

    • Prefers full sun for optimal growth and color.

  • Soil:

    • Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.

  • Watering:

    • Drought-tolerant; water moderately and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

    • Overwatering can lead to root rot.

  • Temperature:

    • Tolerates temperatures down to around -5°C (23°F).

    • Protection from frost is recommended.

Additional Notes:

  • It's important to be mindful of its conservation status. In its native habitat, it faces threats from urban expansion and mining.

  • It is also sold under the name Corpuscularia lehmannii.

  • It is a good plant for rock gardens, container gardens, and as a house plant in sunny locations.
