Yucca brevifolia, commonly known as the Joshua Tree, is a slow-growing, long-lived succulent tree native to the Mojave Desert in the southwestern United States. With its twisted, upright branches and dense clusters of spiky, sword-shaped leaves, this plant has become an iconic symbol of arid landscapes. Its architectural form, drought tolerance, and rugged beauty make it a standout specimen for xeriscapes and collectors of rare desert plants.
Features:
- Distinctive tree-like form with multiple upright branches
- Rigid, bluish-green leaves in dense rosettes at branch tips
- Can reach heights of 3–12 metres in natural habitat (smaller in cultivation)
- Produces creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers on tall stalks in spring (when mature)
- Extremely drought-tolerant and adapted to dry, sandy soils
- Long lifespan and slow, steady growth
Care Tips:
- Light: Requires full sun for optimal growth and form.
- Watering: Very drought-tolerant. Water sparingly and allow soil to dry completely between waterings.
- Soil: Prefers sandy, well-drained soils. Avoid heavy, clay-rich soil.
- Temperature: Hardy to about -12°C once established. Protect young plants from frost.
- Fertilizer: Minimal feeding needed. Use a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser in spring if desired.
- Placement: Best suited for large outdoor spaces, xeriscapes, or desert gardens. Can be grown in containers when young.
