Sedum brevifolium is a charming, mat-forming succulent known for its tiny, rounded leaves and dense, cushion-like growth. The foliage is typically grey-green or bluish-green, turning pinkish or reddish in response to sun exposure or cooler temperatures. This slow-growing species creates a beautiful, compact carpet that’s ideal for rock gardens, succulent trays, ground cover, or as a filler between stepping stones.

During the warmer months, Sedum brevifolium may produce delicate, star-shaped white or pale pink flowers that add a subtle touch of beauty to its already appealing foliage. Its resilience and adaptability make it a great choice for water-wise gardens.

Key Characteristics

  • Tiny, rounded leaves forming dense, low-growing mats
  • Colour shifts from green to pink-red with sun or cold
  • Produces small star-shaped flowers in warmer months
  • Excellent for ground cover, rock gardens, and pots
  • Drought-tolerant and low maintenance

Care Tips

  • Light: Prefers full sun to light shade; colour improves with more sun
  • Watering: Allow soil to dry out between waterings; drought-tolerant once established
  • Soil: Requires well-draining, sandy or gritty soil
  • Temperature: Tolerates cool weather; protect from hard frost
  • Fertilising: Not usually necessary; a diluted feed in spring can support growth
  • Propagation: Easily propagated by stem or leaf cuttings
  • Maintenance: Minimal; occasional trimming helps maintain shape
