The Monkey's Tail Cactus, or Hildewintera colademononis, is a rare and visually striking cactus native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia. This trailing cactus is named for its long, cascading stems covered in soft, white, hair-like spines that resemble a monkey’s tail. The stems can grow over a metre in length, making it a stunning choice for hanging baskets or elevated planters.

Key Characteristics:

  • Growth Habit: Trailing and sprawling with thick, cylindrical stems.
  • Spines: Dense, silky white spines that are soft to the touch.
  • Flowers: Produces large, vivid red to magenta blooms in late spring to summer.
  • Mature Size: Stems can grow up to 1.5 metres long in ideal conditions.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct morning sun, but strong afternoon sun may scorch the stems.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly during the growing season (spring and summer) when the soil is dry to the touch. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix to prevent root rot.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Ideal temperature range is 10–25°C.
  • Fertilising: Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season to encourage flowering and healthy growth.
  • Potting: Best suited to hanging baskets or tall pots that allow its stems to trail naturally.

The first photo serves a display purpose only. The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 100mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.

My plant arrived fresh n happy! It was life size! 😁 ...So big and fat n even quite long! The hair/ fur wasn't as prickly as I thought it might be.. I would most definitely buy again. The price was very reasonable as it would be a couple years old I am thinking. Thank you for my amazing Manfred! That's his name, not variety! 😄
