Stapelia leendertziae, commonly known as "Black Bells," is a fascinating succulent plant known for its unique star-shaped flowers with dark, almost black, velvety petals.It is widely grown in gardens but distinctly uncommon in the wild.

Growth Habit:

  • Habit: Low-growing and spreading, forming dense clumps.

  • Branching: Stems may branch out as the plant matures.

  • Stapelia leendertziae is the most striking plant especially when in flower, due to the unique, large, bell-shaped, deep reddish to dark purple flowers that are up to 12 cm long.

Flowers:

  • Bloom Period: Flowers typically emerge in late spring to early summer.

  • Flower Type: Unusual star-shaped flowers with five petals.

  • Color: Deep maroon to almost black, mimicking the appearance of velvet.

  • Texture: The petals have a velvety surface, adding to the unique visual appeal.

  • The flower has a very strong and disagreeable, musty or carrion-like odour which attracts flies for pollination.

Cultural Requirements:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade.
