Agave Isthmensis Oji Raijin
Agave Isthmensis Oji Raijin
The Agave isthmensis 'Ohi Raijin', commonly referred to as the 'King of Spades', is a compact and visually striking variety of agave.
Growing/Leaves:
Known for its dense rosette of short, broad leaves, this plant features a dramatic bluish-green color with pronounced silvery-white markings that resemble hieroglyphs or watermarks.
The leaf margins are often lined with fine, sharp teeth and terminate in a darker, somewhat stout spine, adding to its dramatic appearance.
It grows relatively slowly, which is typical for many agaves.
This slow growth rate makes it easy to maintain without frequent repotting or dividing.
The leaves form a tight, compact rosette, enhancing its neat, rounded appearance.
Cultural Requirements:
Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In very hot climates, some shade during the hottest part of the day helps prevent scorching.
Soil: Prefers well-draining soil; a standard cactus mix or adding sand or gravel to regular potting soil can improve drainage.
Water: Like most agaves, 'Ohi Raijin' is drought-tolerant. Water infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between watering sessions.
Uses:
Its small size and ornamental appearance make it a perfect candidate for container gardening, either indoors or on patios.
It can be a standout addition to rock gardens or mixed succulent beds, where its unique texture and coloration will draw the eye.
Suitable for xeriscapes or drought-resistant garden themes due to its low water requirements.
