Euphorbia Meloformis
Euphorbia meloformis, commonly known as the Melon Spurge, is a charming and distinctive succulent native to South Africa that makes a wonderful addition to Australian collections. This low-growing, stemless (or very short-stemmed) euphorbia features a globose to cylindrical body, often resembling a small melon. The body is typically divided into around 8 prominent ribs that are usually smooth or slightly undulate. While generally described as spineless, the ribs are lined with small, horny tubercles (remnants of flower stalks) along the angles, giving it a subtle textured appearance rather than sharp spines. Over time, Euphorbia meloformis can slowly form clusters through offsets. In spring and summer, it produces interesting, long-stalked cyathia (the specialized flower structure of euphorbias) that are typically yellowish-green to purple-red, adding a touch of subtle colour. Its unique shape, relatively easy care, and tolerance for Australian conditions make it a delightful and intriguing succulent for enthusiasts across the continent.
Key Characteristics for Australian Conditions:
Melon-like Shape: Globose to cylindrical body resembling a small melon, making it a visually appealing and unusual specimen.
Prominent Ribs: Typically features around 8 vertical ribs along its body.
Near Spineless: While often described as spineless, it has small, horny tubercles along the ribs, not sharp spines.
Clustering Habit: Can slowly form clumps of multiple heads through the production of offsets (pups).
Drought Tolerant: Well-suited to many Australian climates once established, requiring minimal watering.
Tolerates Australian Heat: Generally handles warm to hot temperatures experienced across much of Australia. However, protection from the most intense midday sun in very hot inland areas is advisable.
The first two photos serves a display purpose only. The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 130mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.
