Crassula muscosa, commonly known as Watch Chain or Lizard's Tail, is a fascinating and unique succulent plant native to South Africa.This little beauty has a few common names which include Watch Chain, Watch Chain Plant, Princess Pine, Lizard’s Tail, Zipper Plant, Toy Cypress, Rat tail Crassula and Club moss Crassula.

Leaves:

  • Arrangement: Opposite, densely packed, overlapping, and closely stacked along the stems.

  • Shape: Cylindrical, resembling miniature pine trees.

  • Color: Bright green, with a subtle hint of red or bronze in response to sunlight.

  • It has tiny green leaves that appear to overlap each other.

Growth Habit:

  • Habit: Spreading and mat-forming, creating a dense carpet.

  • Crassula muscosa's leaves are small, elongated, and slightly pointed, usually about 0.2 to 0.4 inches (5 to 10 millimeters) long.

Cultural Requirements:

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light; some direct sunlight enhances coloration.

  • Soil: Well-draining succulent or cactus mix.

  • It prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight.

Very easy to grow but like all crassulas do not over water. Looks great in a hanger, container or rockeries. Full sun/ part shade. 

Unique Features:

  • Resembles a "living chain" with its cylindrical, stacked leaves.

  • Drought-tolerant and resilient, making it suitable for low-maintenance landscapes.

  • Can exhibit a charming reddish tint when exposed to bright sunlight.

Uses:

  • Excellent as ground cover in succulent gardens or rockeries.

  • Suitable for hanging baskets, allowing the trailing stems to cascade.

  • Adds a unique texture to mixed succulent arrangements.

  • Crassula muscosa is well-suited for hanging baskets, rock gardens, and as a ground cover in succulent gardens.

Crassula muscosa is well-adapted to arid conditions, making it a resilient and low-maintenance plant. Crassula muscosa can produce small, star-shaped, white or pale pink flowers at the tips of the stems, especially in the spring or early summer.
