Alluaudia procera, commonly known as the Madagascar Ocotillo or the Alluaudia Tree, is a unique and fascinating succulent plant that is native to the arid regions of Madagascar. With its distinctive branching structure and spiny foliage, Alluaudia procera is an eye-catching addition to any succulent collection or arid landscape.
Foliage:
Leaf Arrangement: Leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along the stems.
Leaf Shape: Narrow, cylindrical, and elongated leaves.
Leaf Color: Green to bluish-green.
During the dry season, Alluaudia procera may lose its leaves, and the stems can take on a grayish-brown color, adding to its drought-tolerant adaptations.
Growth Habit:
Habit: Upright and tree-like growth habit with a central trunk.
Branching: Branches dichotomously, creating a unique and symmetrical appearance.
Alluaudia procera is known for its unique growth habit, with stems that can reach heights of up to 30 feet (9 meters) in their native habitat.
In cultivation, the tree usually reaches a more manageable height of around 6 to 15 feet (2 to 4.5 meters).
It prefers full sun exposure and well-draining soil that replicates its arid native habitat. Alluaudia procera makes a striking addition to xeriscapes, desert-themed gardens, or succulent arrangements.
