Aeonium 'Atropurpureum', commonly known as Purple Aeonium, is a popular cultivar of the Aeonium plant species, which is native to the Canary Islands and North Africa. It is a slow-growing succulent that forms rosettes of long, pointed leaves in shades of deep purple and maroon.

Growing Habit:

  • Habit: Upright growth habit with a tendency to sprawl as it matures.

Size:

  • The Purple Aeonium plant typically grows up to 60 cm (2 feet) tall and 45 cm (18 inches) wide, with its rosettes reaching up to 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter.

Leaf :

  • The leaves are fleshy, lance-shaped, and covered in a waxy coating, which helps the plant retain moisture in dry conditions.

  • The plant also produces tall, branching inflorescences in late winter or early spring, bearing small, yellow-green flowers.

Cultural Requirements:

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade.

  • Soil: Well-draining soil mix; avoid waterlogged conditions.

  • It prefers well-draining soil and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering.

  • Which should be taken in spring or early summer and allowed to callus over before planting in well-draining soil.

Uses:

  • Ideal for xeriscaping, It is a popular choice for succulent gardens, rock gardens, and as a houseplant due to its striking, dark foliage and low-maintenance requirements.

  • Adds a bold, contrasting color to succulent gardens.

Purple Aeonium is a relatively low-maintenance plant that can thrive both indoors and outdoors in a sunny or partly shaded location. The plant is also frost-tolerant and can withstand temperatures down to 0°C (32°F), making it suitable for outdoor cultivation in mild to temperate climates. Rosettes are formed at the ends of the stems. Yellow flowers form long clusters in the summer. It grows in full sun near the coast and partial shade inland. Water occasionally to infrequently.
