Embrace the captivating and slightly fearsome beauty of the Faucaria Tiger's Jaw succulent! This unique, low-growing succulent forms intriguing rosettes of thick, fleshy, triangular leaves that truly resemble the open jaws of a tiger. The leaf margins are adorned with soft, harmless, white or yellowish "teeth" that add to its striking appearance.

Characteristics:

  • Distinctive Foliage: The most remarkable feature is its chunky, triangular, green leaves with prominent, tooth-like edges. These "teeth" are not sharp but rather soft and flexible. The leaves can sometimes take on hues of pinkish-red or purple depending on the amount of sunlight received.
  • Compact Growth: Tiger's Jaw typically grows to a modest size, reaching about 10-15 cm in height and spread, making it perfect for small spaces, windowsills, and container gardens. It forms dense clumps over time.
  • Charming Flowers: Mature and happy plants can produce surprisingly large, daisy-like flowers in shades of bright yellow. These flowers usually appear in autumn or early winter and typically open in the afternoon sun, closing in the evening.
  • Low Maintenance: This succulent is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.
  • Versatile Use: Ideal for container gardening, rock gardens, succulent arrangements, and as an interesting indoor plant. Its unique texture and form add a touch of the unusual to any plant collection.

Care for Australia:

  • Light: Faucaria Tiger's Jaw thrives in bright, indirect sunlight to full sun. In Australia, especially during the hot summer months, some protection from intense midday sun can prevent leaf burn, particularly for indoor plants moved outdoors. A spot that receives morning sun and afternoon shade is often ideal. Indoor plants should be placed near a sunny window.
  • Soil: It requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot, which is a common issue with succulents. Use a cactus or succulent potting mix readily available in garden centres across Australia. You can further improve drainage by adding perlite or coarse sand to the mix.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a significant risk. During the active growing season (spring and summer in Australia), you might water every 2-3 weeks, depending on your local climate and the pot size. Reduce watering significantly in winter when the plant is mostly dormant; watering once a month or even less may suffice.
  • Temperature: While it can tolerate mild temperatures, Faucaria Tiger's Jaw is not frost-tolerant. In cooler regions of Australia that experience frost, it's best to grow this succulent in a pot that can be moved indoors during the winter months to protect it from freezing temperatures (below -4°C). In warmer parts of Australia, it can remain outdoors year-round.
  • Humidity: It prefers low to moderate humidity, which is typical of many Australian climates, especially inland. Good air circulation is beneficial.
  • Fertilizing: Minimal fertilization is needed. You can feed it once or twice during the spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in winter.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container, using a well-draining succulent mix. The best time for repotting is in spring or early summer.
  • Pests and Diseases: Generally pest and disease resistant if proper care is provided, especially regarding watering and drainage. Watch out for common succulent pests like mealybugs or spider mites, and address any infestations promptly. Root rot can occur with overwatering.

The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 190mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same. Plants are shipped as bare rooted.
